What to Eat Before and After a Workout for Best Results
Nutrition plays a major role in how effective your workouts are and how quickly your body recovers afterward. At W Fitness Wanaka, many members focus on training consistency, but nutrition is equally important for performance and recovery.
Why Workout Nutrition Matters
Proper nutrition helps improve workout performance, maintain energy levels, support muscle growth, and speed up recovery.
What to Eat Before a Workout
Ideally eat a full meal 2-3 hours before exercise, or a lighter snack 30-60 minutes before training. Best pre-workout meals (earlier in the day):** chicken, rice and vegetables; eggs on wholegrain toast; Greek yogurt with berries; oatmeal with banana and peanut butter.** Lighter snacks (closer to training time):** banana, fruit smoothie, yogurt, wholegrain toast with honey.** Foods to avoid before training:** heavy fried foods, high-fat meals, very high fibre meals, large sugary snacks.**
What to Eat After a Workout
The best post-workout meals combine protein and carbohydrates: protein smoothie with fruit, Greek yogurt with berries, chicken with rice or potatoes, turkey sandwich on wholegrain bread, eggs and toast.
Simple Nutrition Tips for Better Gym Results
Stay hydrated throughout the day. Eat whole foods - fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, healthy fats. Prioritise recovery with rest and post-workout nutrition. Train consistently.
